Getting on the bandwagon (NSFW)

This is a parody – taking the mickey out of the people who are propagating so called ‘lean startups’.

Since Mr Retail Ingenuity (brilliant and effective man, BTW) and I are involved in creating a startup, it is particulartly relevant for us, but not exclusively so.

Substitute ‘lean startup’ for any consulting buzzword, and the video remains extremely relevant. And that is the prblem consultants (from the dark art of social media gurus to proper consultants) is this:

The bandwagon always has room for one more.

Of course by the time a practice becomes the flavour du jour, the time for that practice is passe – because it has lost its power to differentiate.

For instance, benchmarking is all the craze, but as soon as something becomes the benchmark, it also becomes the bar over which you should jump. Unfortunately too many see the benchmark as the aim, instead of setting the benchmark in the first place.

  • Are you a follower or a leader?
  • Do subscribe to the buzz or do you create it?
  • Can you see through the hype and understand the context (and limitations) that always apply?

What are your thoughts?

  1. I should add that I think there is a LOT of merit in the idea of lean start up. Just that, like anything, there is a limit and there is context…
